Silver Winds

The Silver Winds

The Silver Winds is a flute ensemble that was formed in the summer of 2000 by the co-directors Christina Castellanos and Bonnie Buhler-Tanouye.  Now run by Christina in Utah (Bonnie in Nevada), the players consist of students from her current private flute studio, as well as occasional alumnae members. The ages have ranged from students as young as four, through adult amateurs, and include elementary, middle school and high school students.  The music is selected based on those that can attend and the ability mixes in the group, so that each student has a chance to participate on music that is both playable and challenging. The co-directors strongly believe that this mix of students helps the younger students learn from those students who are older, while the more advanced students are given a position of leadership. The end result is a high-quality musical group of as many as 25 players.

This group currently performs twice each year, in December and July, in what has become known as a ‘Retirement Home Tour’ experience. The group will typically perform at six retirement homes over the course of two days, and occasionally programs an open concert for family and friends at such locations as churches and malls.
